What Is An IRS Audit?

An IRS audit is when the Inland Revenue Service (IRS) reviews or examines a person’s or organization’s accounts and financial information. They aim to ensure companies and individuals report their information correctly and abide by all tax laws.

Most people selected for audits receive notification by mail, with audits conducted through in-person interviews or by mail to review your records.

Why Have I Been Selected for An Audit?

Receiving communication from the IRS that you’ve been selected for an audit can be scary. You might believe you’ve been filing your taxes properly, so you’re confused as to why you’ve been explicitly chosen.

Being selected for an audit doesn’t necessarily mean there’s a problem. Instead, you might have been picked for one of the following reasons:

  1. You were randomly selected with a statistical formula. The IRS compares statistical norms, and your tax information was chosen to compare against those norms.
  2. There were issues with transactions.
  3. Business partners and investors were selected for audits.

What Information to Provide for An IRS Audit

AmeriTax can assist with making sure you have all the appropriate information for an IRS audit, but it doesn’t hurt to know what you need to  provide. Generally, the IRS requests the following information:

  • Receipts and bills
  • Canceled checks
  • Legal papers
  • Loan agreements
  • Logs or diaries
  • Tickets
  • Medical records
  • Theft or loss
  • Employment documents
  • Schedule K-1

The IRS also states that organizing all records by the year and the type of income or expense might speed up the process and reduce the risk of errors and misunderstandings. Most IRS audits involve records for the last three years and don’t typically go back more than six years.

What Happens After An IRS Audit?

Our goal is to help the auditing process go as smoothly and seamlessly as possible. At the end of the auditing process, you can typically expect one of these three outcomes:

  1. No changes – You’ve substantiated all items under review, and no changes are required.
  2. Agreed changes – The IRS has proposed changes that you’ve understood and agreed with.
  3. Disagreed changes – The IRS has proposed changes, and you understand them but don’t agree
    with them.

If you have the third outcome, you can request a meeting with an IRS manager, where you’ll be offered mediation or the chance to appeal if time allows.
